- Training Teaching Artists in Social Justice Education & Organizing

TEACHING ARTISTS, APPLY NOW! Download the application here.

Our training institute will screen and select diverse teaching artists who are of African descent, teach cultural arts of the African Diaspora, and are at all various levels of their careers as teaching artists. Only those truly committed to the personal, cultural, artistic, and leadership growth of youth of African descent are encouraged to apply.

The artists will partake in a paid training course of 7 Saturdays beginning March of 2007. Teaching artists will be trained in social justice education and community organizing through cultural arts. Participants will be coached and supported in designing and implementing their own unique curriculums based on social justice. Trainers will include leaders in the fields of education, arts, culture, and community organizing. Upon successful completion of the institute, teaching artists will be placed in competitively paid teaching artist residencies in diverse schools, cultural arts education institutions, and community based organizations. Through their residencies, youth will create cultural arts projects that will empower young people, foster justice in their home communities and address diverse social justice problems they identify. The final art pieces and performances will be installed by a professional curator at the Caribbean Cultural Center Gallery and will tour New York City community and art institutions in the Winter of 2007 into 2008.

Each teaching artist will be partnered with a classroom teacher and a community organizer; forming a triangle of support to create and implement their particular curriculum. We will also provide professional and personal growth opportunities for participants including mentorship, access to free workshops, classes, networking sessions with teachers and community groups, etc. All applicants will be automatically added to our network of teaching artists of African descent who are committed to social justice.
